Free Second Opinions on AC Repair & Replacement Quotes

If another contractor has recommended replacing your system, we will inspect it before you commit. A licensed technician performs a full diagnostic, evaluates whether the original diagnosis is supported, and provides our findings in writing. The visit is free and carries no obligation.

  • Always free
  • Written findings, no obligation
  • Repair-or-replace analysis
  • Owner-operated, ROC #365835
The Helping Hands Heating & Cooling van with the desert sunburst wrap parked at a job

A technician has told you the air conditioner needs to be replaced. The quote is five figures, and you are being asked to decide the same afternoon, in a warm house, on one of the larger purchases you will make this year.

Before you commit, call or text (602) 456-1464 and let us inspect the system.

Helping Hands provides free second opinions on AC repair and replacement quotes across Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Scottsdale and Phoenix. We are an owner-operated company based in Glendale. We inspect the actual equipment, evaluate whether the first diagnosis is supported by what we measure, and provide our findings in writing at no charge and with no obligation.

Phoenix fact. “Full-unit replacement gets thrown around a little too easily when units get over 10 years old.” That is Aaron Hoberg, our owner, replying to a homeowner on Google after determining that their older system still had service life remaining. It is the reason this page exists.

What a second opinion is

A second opinion is a complete diagnostic visit by a licensed technician with no stake in the first contractor’s quote. We check the same items that should have been checked the first time: amp draw on the compressor and fan motors, refrigerant pressures, airflow across the coil, the condition of both coils, the ductwork, the electrical connections and the control board. We then compare our measurements against what you were told.

The visit has no sales component. We are not there to undercut the other quote or to sell you a system. If the unit does need replacement, our findings state that, and you are welcome to take that confirmation to the first contractor or request a free replacement estimate from us. If the unit does not need replacement, we document what it does need and what that costs, in writing, and the decision is yours.

How a free second opinion works

  1. Call or text (602) 456-1464. Describe what the other contractor said and what the system has been doing. If you have their quote or diagnostic sheet, keep it available.
  2. We schedule a visit, usually the same or next day. You receive a scheduled arrival window and a text when the technician is en route.
  3. We inspect the system, not the paperwork. A full diagnostic of the outdoor unit, the air handler or furnace, the thermostat and the ductwork. We show you each measurement as it is taken.
  4. You receive our assessment. Whether the original diagnosis is supported, and if not, what is actually wrong and whether a repair or a replacement is the better value for your home.
  5. Everything in writing, and the decision is yours. You keep the written findings. There is no fee, no obligation and no follow-up sales contact.

The misdiagnoses we see most in the Valley

Some are the result of a rushed inspection. Whatever the cause, they cost Valley homeowners a great deal of money every summer.

  • A minor electrical fault diagnosed as a failed compressor. The unit hums but the fan does not turn, or it clicks and never starts. That is often a contactor or another inexpensive part we carry in stock. It is described as a failed compressor far too often.
  • A low refrigerant charge presented as grounds for replacement. Low refrigerant means there is a leak. Leaks can be located and repaired. A system is not at end of life because it lost charge. It is at end of life only if the leak cannot be repaired economically, and that must be determined by inspection, not assumed.
  • R-22 systems condemned on sight. R-22 is no longer manufactured, so it is expensive, and that does affect the long-term calculation. An R-22 unit with a sound compressor and a failed fan motor can still often run another season or two while you plan a replacement on your own schedule.
  • Dirty coils and airflow problems mistaken for a failing unit. A condenser coil coated in monsoon dust, a clogged evaporator coil, crushed flex duct in the attic or a filter that has not been changed since spring will make a sound system perform as if it is failing. Correct the airflow and the system recovers.
  • A cracked heat exchanger diagnosis without a direct inspection. This appears on heating calls. A cracked exchanger is a legitimate safety concern and a legitimate reason to replace a furnace. It is also a diagnosis sometimes made without removing a panel. We inspect the exchanger directly and document the result.
  • A ten-year-old system condemned on age alone. Ten to fifteen years is a normal service life for a Valley system, and many run longer with maintenance. Age is one factor, not a verdict.

When replacement is the correct recommendation

Not every system can or should be repaired, and this page would be misleading if it implied otherwise. When replacement is the correct recommendation, our findings state it.

  • A failed compressor on an older R-22 unit. The compressor is the most expensive component, and installing one in a system that runs on a discontinued refrigerant rarely makes financial sense.
  • Repeated summer failures. A unit that has required a major repair three summers in a row is costing the price of a new system in installments without delivering reliable cooling.
  • A rooftop package unit with cabinet corrosion. Common on older Glendale and Phoenix homes. When the cabinet and coil are corroding, the investment belongs in a correctly sized new unit.
  • A system that was never sized correctly for the house. Sometimes the unit has been struggling since installation. A replacement done correctly resolves comfort problems that no repair will.

When that is the situation, our written findings state it, and if you would like a free estimate on the replacement we will provide one. If you prefer to return to the first contractor with our confirmation, that is fine as well.

What a second opinion looks like in practice

Kyle Barrett, a homeowner who called us after being told his older unit was finished, wrote on Google: “Aaron Hoberg and his associate came by and gave us great news. It’s good hearing that an older AC unit still has some life. They were very professional and kind.”

John Hlivka wrote: “I have known Aaron for over 6 years now and the service and honest approach he offers is unique in HVAC companies.” His first call to us involved a new build with a system that operated only intermittently after several other contractors had been unable to resolve it. We identified the actual cause rather than replacing components until the symptom stopped.

That is the approach on every visit: identify the actual problem, document it, and let the homeowner decide with accurate information.

What a complete diagnosis and quote should contain

You do not need to be an HVAC technician to evaluate the quote in front of you. A replacement recommendation should be supported by the following. If any are missing, a second inspection is worthwhile.

  • Evidence the panels were removed. A compressor, coil or heat exchanger cannot be evaluated from the thermostat or the driveway. Ask what was inspected directly.
  • A repair option alongside replacement options. A complete quote states what a repair would cost and why replacement is recommended over it. If every line on the sheet is a new system, ask for the repair comparison.
  • Sizing based on the house. The replacement tonnage should be based on the home’s current size, orientation, insulation and windows, not copied from the nameplate of the old unit. Ask how the system was sized.
  • A price that holds beyond the visit. A correct price for a correctly specified system is the same price tomorrow. You should be able to take the quote home and compare it.
  • Scope in line items. Removal and disposal, pad or curb, electrical, thermostat, startup and warranty registration should each be listed so you can compare bids on equal terms.

What to have ready when we come out

None of this is required. It makes the comparison more precise.

  • The other contractor’s quote, invoice or diagnostic sheet
  • The make, model and approximate age of the system, if known
  • The symptoms: warm air, ice on the lines, breaker tripping, short cycling, unusual sounds
  • Any photos the first technician left or sent you
  • Your most recent APS or SRP bills, if efficiency was part of the recommendation

Second opinions across the cities we serve

We are based in Glendale, and most second opinion visits are within a 30-minute drive of it.

Glendale: second opinions the same afternoon

Home base, which often allows a visit the same afternoon the first contractor leaves. Glendale’s mix of older rooftop package units and 1990s split systems means we see both corroded units where replacement is warranted and “failed compressor” calls that turn out to be a minor electrical repair. We document which condition applies. HVAC in Glendale.

Peoria: replacement quotes at the ten-year mark

Peoria homeowners most often call after a replacement recommendation on a system near the ten-year mark, particularly in the newer neighborhoods where builder-grade equipment is aging at the same time. Ten years is a point to evaluate the system, not a service-life limit. HVAC in Peoria.

Surprise: confirming rooftop replacement quotes

Surprise has a large population of retirees on fixed budgets, for whom a five-figure quote is a significant decision. If you are in Sun City Grand or the surrounding communities and were told the rooftop unit must be replaced, we will confirm it before you commit. HVAC in Surprise.

Scottsdale: quotes to replace every system at once

Larger Scottsdale homes often run two or three systems, and we see quotes to replace all of them when one has failed. A second opinion identifies which units have a problem and which are being included in the sale. HVAC in Scottsdale.

Phoenix: reviewing this week’s replacement quote

North and West Phoenix are well within our service radius, and the number of HVAC companies working the city means a correspondingly high number of replacement quotes. If one arrived this week, we will review it. HVAC in Phoenix.

We also serve Goodyear, Avondale, Litchfield Park, Sun City, Sun City West, Anthem, Cave Creek and Paradise Valley. If your area is nearby and not listed, contact us to confirm coverage.

Why homeowners trust our second opinion

  • Nothing is sold on the visit. The opinion is free and the visit ends when you have the findings.
  • Owner-operated. Aaron Hoberg holds the license and oversees every job. Based in Glendale.
  • Findings in writing. What we found and what we recommend. You keep the document.
  • Licensed, bonded and insured. Arizona ROC #365835, CR-39 Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, dual residential and commercial.
  • 5.0 stars on Google. Honesty is the quality customers mention most.
  • Replacement is recommended when it is warranted. A second opinion is only useful if it can go either way. Ours does.
  • Same-day or next-day on most calls. Monday through Saturday, 7 to 5, with a scheduled arrival window.
  • Heating systems included. Furnace and heat pump diagnoses receive the same evaluation. See heater replacement if that is the recommendation you received.

Questions about second opinions

Answers to the questions we are asked most often. For anything else, call or text (602) 456-1464.

Is the second opinion free even if I do not hire you?

Yes. There is no charge for the visit, the inspection or the written findings, and no obligation to use us afterward. If our findings agree with the other contractor, you have two matching diagnoses and can proceed with confidence. If they differ, you receive a written explanation of what we found and what we recommend instead.

What should I have ready when you come out?

The other contractor's quote or invoice if you have it, the make and model of the system if known, and a description of the symptoms: warm air, breaker tripping, ice on the lines, short cycling. If the first technician left photos or a diagnostic sheet, keep it available. None of this is required, but it allows us to compare their findings directly against ours.

How often does the first diagnosis turn out to be wrong?

Often enough that we made this a standing service. The most common pattern is a failed contactor or another inexpensive electrical part described as a failed compressor or a system at end of life. The second is a low refrigerant charge presented as grounds for replacement rather than a leak to locate and repair. We also see many correct diagnoses, and when the first contractor was right, our written findings confirm it.

My system is 12 or 15 years old. Is replacement the correct decision?

Not automatically. Valley systems work hard and ten to fifteen years is a normal service life here, but age alone does not condemn a unit. A sound compressor with a failed fan motor has years of service remaining. The relevant factors are the condition of the compressor, the refrigerant type, the repair cost relative to replacement cost, and the condition of the rest of the system. We evaluate all four and document the comparison.

What if you agree that it needs to be replaced?

Then our written findings state that conclusion, with the reasons. A failed compressor on an older R-22 unit, a package unit with cabinet corrosion, or a system that has required a major repair three summers in a row usually does indicate replacement. You can take that confirmation to the first contractor or request a free replacement estimate from us. Either option is fine.

Can you give a second opinion on a heating or furnace diagnosis?

Yes. Heat pumps, gas furnaces and package units all qualify. A common case in the Valley is a cracked heat exchanger diagnosis made without a direct inspection of the exchanger. We inspect it properly, document what we find, and state whether repair, replacement or no action is indicated.

How fast can you come out? The other contractor wants an answer today.

Most second opinion visits in Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Scottsdale and Phoenix are scheduled the same day or the next day, Monday through Saturday, 7 to 5. A correct diagnosis will still be correct tomorrow, so a decision of this size can wait for a second inspection. Call or text (602) 456-1464 to schedule.
